To Debate

A lot of people have different opinions, and that includes Roy, Samuel, and I.  We have many differences.

  • I like classical music and think that modern music has many dissonant chords, while Roy likes contemporary music and its excitement. (Justin vs. Roy, Samuel, and Vany)

ROY:  It looks like Justin opposes change.  The way classics became classics are different adaptations and interpretations.  Bach isn’t played today as it was 200 year[s] ago.

JUSTIN:  I don’t oppose every sort of change.  200 years from now, or even sooner, people would desert “Explosive”.

ROY:  Culture changes.

JUSTIN:  Yes, culture changes, but not everyone changes with it.  I bet that when you’re still living and culture changes in terms of music, you’ll still support such songs.

SAMUEL:  People might desert classical music too…unless you have magical powers that enable you to read the future (yeah right).

JUSTIN:  You mean, some people.  I was just learning about an author, Willa Cather, who thought that classical ways were better, and contemporary ways were “too empty”.

SAMUEL:  Maybe the world will end like Transall Saga! Did those people know about classical music? No…meaning it was deserted..ha!

JUSTIN:  Did the people in “Transall Saga” know about contemporary music?  Was the author biased on that subject?  Just because other people give up something doesn’t mean I have to give up something.  And what does a futuristic book have to do with the real future?

SAMUEL:  Okay, so maybe both types of music may be forgotten.  If you’re getting frustrated (good…payback for the spelling comment) then delete this page.

JUSTIN:  Oh, here’s a decent fact to remember:  the golden ratio, in other words the ratio of beauty, is associated with classical music.  If you doubt my words then read “The Golden Ratio” by Mario Livio.  And by the way, I am not getting frustrated.  In fact, I am exactly the opposite–very calm.  Are you telling me to give up just because you’re ready to give up?  (That made you frustrated, huh?)

VANY:  Modern Music > Classical Music (My opinion, don’t kill me)

JUSTIN:  Reasons?  Classical music helps me calm down when I’m really stressed out.

  • I am against procrastination, while Roy and Samuel are everything for it.  (That’s why Roy hasn’t written his first post for quarter 4, let alone the second.) (Justin vs. Samuel and Roy)

JUSTIN:  Procrastination stresses people out.  If you get everything done first, then you can have extra time to “play”.  If you wait until the last second, you’ll find yourself scrambling to catch up if you don’t forget.

SAMUEL:  You forgot everyone else in the world.

JUSTIN:  You don’t have proof.  Not everybody in the world is like that.  Ask an organized person.  Organized people know how to manage their time wisely.

SAMUEL:  Umm…how many people have actually written either of the posts?

JUSTIN:  I can show you a long list of them:  Asaf, Brooke, Emily C, Josh, … and I’ve looked at 8 blogs.  It’s always good to be ahead but not good to be behind.  I’ll just get it over with.

ROY:  Procrastination is more efficient.  The pressure exerted on you makes you work faster because the project is due the next day. You could get a project done well in about 1 hour. However, if you do it along the way, you could be using up to 5 hours! You could be using those 4 hours doing other stuff!

JUSTIN:  In middle school we have way too many tests, quizzes, and projects to be dawdling.  That will pressure you into doing your project quicker when not procrastinating.  Besides, ask a teacher about procrastination.  Once, Ms. Runyan offered us extra credit if we turned in a project earlier.  By the way, the less time it takes for you to finish a project doesn’t mean you get a better score.  Time does not matter when it comes to EOGs and EOCs.  When we did the Oscar Pistorius essay you got a 90 with 10 minutes work and I got a 100 with a few days’ work.  (It’s your natural talent; it doesn’t apply to everybody procrastinating.)  And of course I did not procrastinate.

VANY:  I have to admit, I’m a procrastinator.  But, actually, I finished my family function album [project] a month before the last due date, so I didn’t have to stress out on Thursdays.

JUSTIN:  Exactly!  So which side should I put you on?

  • I don’t think school is boring, while Roy claims he hates it, like everyone else. (Justin vs. Roy and the world)

JUSTIN:  What is it that’s so bad about school?

VANY (finally someone responded):  No…school’s not “boring”.  Just the learning.  But it’s a place where I can really be with my friends.

JUSTIN:  Well, true, I met precisely 100% of my friends at school.  But I like the learning.

  • I dislike riding roller coasters (they make me nauseous) while Roy keeps trying to persuade me to go to Busch Gardens.  (Justin vs. Samuel)

SAMUEL:  Justin, get into the outside world…honestly.  Sitting home doing MathCounts has made you anti-real world or something like that. Come on! Carosouls (carousels), cup rides, and those big swinging things are for little children, and you’re scared of them.

JUSTIN:  Samuel, there’s people like me in the world. First, I don’t do MathCounts practice. I do homework and piano, which are priorities. Second, I’m open to the real world. I’ve been on them before, and they make me dizzy.  You can’t blame me for something I can’t control.

SAMUEL:  Go to Busch Gardens, I’ll bet you’ll have fun roller coasters or not…

JUSTIN:  Have fun?  When I’m dizzy?  Believe me, I am extremely sensitive to objects that make me dizzy, and I never have fun.  I bet you had fun when you were feeling the same.  When I was in Virginia, I went to a park called Six Flags, and apart from the car rides, I didn’t have much fun.  It’s not like you can pressure me into going to Busch Gardens.

SAMUEL:  Again with the Busch Gardens….I reiterate…you don’t have to go on the rides…just stay outside, play the little booth games, and chat with your friends.

JUSTIN:  There is NO POINT in that when I can do that any day–why must I waste $90 plus lunch fees?  (But if there was something that I liked there, then I would pay $90.)  I could save 100% of the money that I use by doing the same things another day.

VANY:  Roller Coasters scare me. I would ride on it, after lots of pressure on friends, but in the end, i would have a thrill.

JUSTIN:  Of course, they scare me too! But if you really don’t want to ride on them, DON’T give in to peer pressure like I’m doing right now. :D

  • CHANGE.  Do you support it or not?

JUSTIN:  A little bit of change is okay, but why keep on continuing change?  Why do you like change so much, Roy?

SAMUEL:  If there weren’t any major changes in history, then America wouldn’t have gotten its freedom nor gained its rights.  If MLK Jr, Gandhi, or Mandela hadn’t tried to promote change, our world would be a dull, boring place.  Changes can also be bad!

JUSTIN:  Changes CAN be bad.  Change landed our economy here.  Change landed US in the DUMBEST generation EVER in history–the Y-generation.

SAMUEL:  That’s bad change…but you can’t criticize it on just the negatives!

AT THIS POINT:  Samuel and I can’t tip the argument over!  Can someone else do it?

VANY:  Doesn’t matter if you support change or not, there’s always going to be change. No. Matter. What.  And yeah, I support it, because change will make an effect, and that will make an effect, and who knows what will happen?

JUSTIN:  Change isn’t good when it’s frequent. So which change are you referring to?

  • Cell phones (texting) and I-pods.  Do you like them or think they’re a waste?

JUSTIN:  They are a waste of both money and time.  They cost $100 or more, and studies show that people who use them for texting get brain cancer.

AMY G:  Cell phones makes it convenient for you to contact people on the go.  Texting is pointless.  MP3 players are helpful bringing music wherever you go.  I-Pods are OK but have unneeded features and is overpriced.

JUSTIN:  I agree with the texting.  But if you don’t have that many friends, and you just carry cell phones, that’s a waste of money.  If you have a lot of friends who call a lot, maybe they would be helpful.  (But I was only referring to texting)  And it wastes electricity if you just call and say,”Oh hi, you’re still there?”  “Yes.” “Great.  Anything going on?”  “No.”  “Oh.”  I wasn’t referring to MP3s, but still, they’re okay.  I-Pods are only for people who want brain cancer.

VANY:  Cellphones is a MUST. Because, when I go out somewhere, my parents HAS to know where i’m going, when i’m coming back, and everything. And I can’t always borrow my parent’s. So having a cellphone is very convenient . And texting… well it’s convenient. i’m not a talking kind of person, and i rather text. Plus, I only have 300 texts per month for about $4. Not wasting that much money. (and yes, i keep track of my texts)

JUSTIN:  “Texting is convenient”, as you say. WHY NOT CALL? And $4–well, you could buy something else you’d want. (I’m saving my money up for college–every dollar counts).

So what do you have to say, Roy?  (And Samuel?)  (And Amy G?)

  2.   theavidreader Says:

It depends on the type of change. I’m interested in Obama’s change, but not really the music change.

  3.   94qm Says:

    Yeah that comment was me.

Still, Bach isn’t played the same way as it was 200 years ago. Culture changes.

Oh, and you forgot everyone else in the world for the procrastination comment.

  5.   theavidreader Says:

    Fine, Roy.

Samuel, there’s people like me in the world. First, I don’t do MathCounts practice. I do homework and piano, which are priorities. Second, I’m open to the real world. I’ve been on them before, and they make me dizzy.

How do you have proof for procrastination? Go ask a teacher or organized person! Organized people know how to manage their time better. You can’t blame a person for what he/she doesn’t control.

  7.   theavidreader Says:

I just get the blog posts over with!
How will people desert classical music? I can bet you that there are still some people who like it. You never know–maybe in the future culture will evolve so that more people will like Classical Period music.
Busch Gardens won’t be fun for somebody who doesn’t like moving things that make you dizzy and nauseous. Busch Gardens is known for those moving objects.

  8.   94qm Says:

    joining the procrastination

However, if you do it along the way, you could be using up to 5 hours! You could be using those 4 hours doing other stuff!

  9.   theavidreader Says:

And also the pressure that you’re going to run out of time makes you work faster when you’re not procrastinating. Go ask a teacher about procrastination. Once Ms. Runyan offered us extra credit if we turned in a project a day earlier.

  10.   theavidreader Says:

Are you joining any more debates…or do you have any to add? And this goes for anybody. You can debate about anything you want.

  11.   samuelch Says:

Maybe the world will end like Transall Saga! Did those people know about classical music? No…meaning it was deserted..ha!
Again with the Busch Gardens….I reiterate…you don’t have to go on the rides…just stay outside, play the little booth games, and chat with your friends

  12.   94qm Says:

Who really cares about your grades. You get A’s in highschool and you’re fine, as long as you have the best schedule. Later, it doesn’t even matter want class rank you are. The point is, don’t waste time getting higher than 93. There’s no point. No university will check your percentage. Speaking of that, procrastination frees up time that you could be using to do other stuff that universities take into account. Academics is not everything for college. More like half.

  13.   theavidreader Says:

Samuel: There is NO POINT in that. Anyday, I could do just that…chat with my friends, go to parks…and I have to do it for $90 excluding lunch. What sort of deal is that? (But money isn’t the important factor. If there was something I’d actually ENJOY, then I would go.)
Did the people know about contemporary music? Just because other people give up classical music doesn’t mean I have to give up classical music. And what does a futuristic book have to do with the real future?

Roy: I care about my grades. Yeah, so, middle school is an important factor colleges look at. When the colleges look at your 60 for the website project and a bunch of other 76s, they won’t be pleased. And you just repeated what you said for comment 9.

  14.   94qm Says:

You misunderstood my post. Colleges DON’T CARE about any single grade you get. They look at your GPA and SAT score but mostly your GPA. Also, I’d like to see you get into a decent college with only academics.

  15.   samuelch Says:

Okay, so maybe both types of music will be forgotten. If you’re getting frustrated (good…payback for the spelling comment) then delete this page.

  16.   theavidreader Says:

Samuel–I am not getting frustrated. In fact, I am the opposite of being frustrated. Are you telling me to give up just because you’re ready to give up? (That made you frustrated, huh?)

Roy–I apologize for getting off the point, so I won’t post this up. Why are we talking about colleges on a debate page?

  17.   samuelch Says:

Okay, I was not getting frustrated, nor am I ready to give up. Wow Justin, is that your way of making someone feel bad? Taking them off your blogroll?

  18.   theavidreader Says:

Can you actually debate on here, not just rant on about an irrelevant topic?

  19.   theavidreader Says:

Every comment that is not related to debate will count as spam, from now on.

  20.   samuelch Says:

I like cellphones and such, but they aren’t that great for you.

Cell phones -> Makes it more convenient for you to contact people on the go.
    Texting -> Pointless.
MP3 players in general -> I like. Bringing music wherever you go is fun.
iPods -> *shrugs* OK… but has features I don’t need and is overpriced (imo)

(wait, should I even be on this page?)

(is this just for you guys?)

(if so, sorry, just ignore me)

  24.   theavidreader Says:

    You’re welcome to debate.

  25.   Vany Says:

Wow justin… lots of debates… Here are my opinions.
    * Modern Music > Classical Music (My opinion, dont kill me)
    * I have to admit, I’m a procrastinator. But, actually, I finished my family function album a month earlier than the last due date, so i didnt have to stress out on those thursdays, like my other friends.
*No… school’s not “boring”. Just the learning. xD but, it’s a place where I can really be who I am (at times…) with my friends, unlike at him, where i’m quiet..er.. (yes, me quiet, what a surprise)
*Roller Coasters scare me. I would ride on it, after lots of pressure on friends, but in the end, i would have a thrill.
*Doesn’t matter if u support change or not, there’s always going to be change. No. Matter. What. And yea, i support it, because change will make an effect, and that will make an effect, and who knows what will happen?

Not wasting that much money. (and yes, i keep track of my texts)

  26.   theavidreader Says:

That’s the good part about letting unregistered users comment–more comments!
Everybody thinks like you do except for me. I guess it will be me versus all of you! (Classical music helps me calm down after I stressed out about something.
Okay, so good–those are the positive effects of not procrastinating. (Roy’s strategy is effective because he’s born intelligent, that’s all.) Procrastination doesn’t work for the majority. All the counselors denounce it.
The good part of the school is the learning.
Of course, they scare me too! But if you really don’t want to ride on them, DON’T give in to peer pressure like I’m doing right now. :D
Change isn’t good when it’s frequent. So which change are you referring to?
“Texting is convenient”, as you say. WHY NOT CALL? And $4–well, you could buy something else you’d want. (I’m saving my money up for college–every dollar counts).

  27.   Vany Says:

    * I do agree that classical music is peaceful and relaxing. Now the music nowadays has lyrics that gives the music a story, and whether or not i can personally relate to it, it has a message (maybe even a life message) in it.
*procrastinator. I do my homework at 9-ish now… but 7th grade isnt hard.
    * I have to learn no matter what, so I’m going to have to get used to it. But I’m learning with my friends! :D
*But they’re fun! I dont really go on those “roller coasters”, I go on other rides, like the swing merry-go-round
*What change are YOU referring to? There’s always change, every second of every day.
*Because, if you are just asking a friend for a homework assignment, you have to call the person, and expect them to actually pick up. You could leave a voicemail, but the person might not think anything of the message, and choose not to listen to the voicemail. You also have to call voicemail, type in the password, and that would take time. Whereas, you text the person, and let the person take their time to read the text and respond when they have time.

  28.   theavidreader Says:

Peaceful and relaxing…I don’t like dissonances.
Homework is one thing; projects are another. For homework, Ms. Vincent just checks it, it’s not graded by achievement.
    Okay.
They are TOLERABLE, but almost intolerable. And roller coasters are beyond intolerable.
I’m referring to MAJOR changes which happen once a year.
I’m sure there are other ways for communication.

  29.   agchan Says:

Why not a mix of classical/modern music? That’s what I listen to… (though, admittedly, more modern than classical). Enjoy the new AND the old!

Dissonance is cool (only a little bit, though) :D

Procrastinating is a bad idea because you don’t know what’s going to happen at the last moment– suppose something comes up and you don’t have the time to work on huge project worth 99.9% of your grade (lol)? (But I procrastinate anyway. I should really stop doing it. xD I’m gonna be dead in high school if I keep this up..)

You should come roller coastering because your friends will miss you and they will cry.

There’s always going to be change, whether it be good change or bad change. Or change for a dollar. *grins* You’ve got to bear with the bad changes and hope for the good change.

I don’t text. (I’m not allowed to, and it’s obscenely expensive anyway.) I call directly. And I keep calling until I get an answer from somebody, if it’s really urgent. I leave voicemail if it’s not that important. With most of my friends, though, emailing works better. o___O I guess we all sit around on the computer but don’t pick up the phone.

Cellphones in general = convenient, it’s easier for me to contact Mom or for Mom to contact me if I’m out @ orchestra concert, rehearsal, etc. Having a cellphone makes it easier for Mom to keep track of where I am and make sure I’m safe and that I’m not getting kidnapped by some stranger or whatever. It makes me feel safer that, even if I get lost or whatever, I can contact Mom/Dad/other adult for help. And they feel safer if I carry a cellphone, too.

WHOA. Just as I typed “phone”, the phone rang. Weird. o__O

  30.   theavidreader Says:

Well, that’s okay. But I don’t really like singing, so if there’s modern music it’ll have to be like Smoke on the Water, classical rock, which I’m fine with. And dissonance is NOT cool. (in my opinion)

Good job on procrastination. Ask any teacher and they’ll go on ranting about its cons.

Roy won’t cry. He has other friends like Ben and Josh. And Samuel won’t cry, either. They’ll be happy that “oh, this all-about-academics person won’t come with us”. Don’t worry about me, nobody will miss me, so they won’t cry. (Or they might cry because they can’t see me experience torture.)

That’s what everyone says about change. I agree that THERE WILL ALWAYS BE CHANGE. But change happening once a month? I’m against that.

Yes, texting is EXPENSIVE. So you’re not abusing your cell phone like most middle-schoolers are.
Coincidence! Which phone–your home phone or cell phone?

  31.   agchan Says:

THEY’LL TOTALLY CRY. ONCE THE BUS PULLS AWAY FROM DDMS, I GUARANTEE THEY’LL START RAINING TEARS. THEY’LL BE SOBBING, “WE WISH JUSTIN WAS HERE!” I’LL TAKE PICTURES FOR YOU. (actually, no I won’t, because I haven’t the faintest clue where the camera is)

    Heh. Home phone. *grins*

  32.   theavidreader Says:

How do you know? They wouldn’t cry over ME. Maybe over each other, but not over me.

    * I was just talking with Roy about contemporary music and classical music today at the orchestra rehearsal. When I asked him the point of choosing contemporary music over classical music, Roy had no response. Clandestine meaning???

  33.   agchan Says:

    Yes they will.

I’ll save their tears in a bucket for you.

    A TEN-GALLON bucket.

  34.   theavidreader Says:

Then that’s probably a waste of a bucket.

P.S. Why don’t you ever comment on Ms. Paisie’s page?

  35.   agchan Says:

I lost the bucket. *regretfully* Sorry.

Really? *blinks* She has a page?

  36.   theavidreader Says:

Don’t worry about the bucket. I don’t need it.

Ms. Paisie’s page is in my blogroll. Maybe you’d comment on the visitors page.

  37.   agchan Says:

    Okay, good.

Sure! :D *goes off to search for Ms. Paisie’s page*

  41.   theavidreader Says:

Oh yeah? Classical music has been good enough to survive for centuries. (WCPE, at least, is classical music supporter.)

Greetings from Idaho Falls! (Tomorrow I will visit Yellowstone)

  42.   94qm Says:

has our current music been given a chance to survive that long? nope…

i suggest you wait. everything goes out of style, some day or another

    have fun at yellowstone
i hope it doesn’t erupt while you’re there

  43.   theavidreader Says:

Can’t believe I’m this late in replying.

Yes, I did have fun @t Yellowstone. And it didn’t erupt, though Old Faithful did

ahem, classical music’s chances of surviving are now 100%–it already survived, else it would have been forgotten before I was born. Contemporary music’s chance is 50%.
